Ever wondered why we do the things we do or how they came to be? Sociology is the study of society. It examines people, cultures, families, social and political institutions, organizations, relationships and the processes and dynamics that make up up these things and the world in which we live in. It helps us to understand systems of social differentiation and inequality, including gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and age, to name a few.

The Sociology Department at ECU is committed to helping its students develop the skills and knowledge required to apply the "sociological imagination" to both their professional and personal lives. From the undergraduate curriculum to the graduate level, department faculty actively engage students, fostering a sound comprehension of sociology and the role it plays in today's world.
